1. Beware the server stuck in a BACK ROOM somewhere or “Right here near me” - they may not be high quality and not have high powered, fast lines into and out of it.
2. Beware no one watching over this computer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – what happens if there is a fire, it over heats, or something else happens – and they aren’t there?
3. Beware the climate and back up systems – make sure there is a backup generator, that the room and even the building is specially built and designed for servers. Ask about fire SAFTEY and other types of saftey measures they have in place.
4. Beware price extremes – FREE or VERY LOW monthly can mean that your host will soon be out of business. On the other extreme, just because a company charges something like 80.00/mo doesn’t mean it’s the best.
5. Beware the reseller – these are people or companies who rent a small portion of some other company’s server and then RE SELL that space – make sure they have control and knowledge of that actual computer and MAKE sure they don’t pack it so full that its hard to get to your web site.
6. Beware low speed lines or no back up lines…look for something called “OC lines – and the bigger the number, the better it may be for you. Make sure they have something called “REDUNDANT” back up – in other words, MORE THAN ONE back up line – Look for OC48-OC 192 for hosting. T-1 lines are just not fast enough.
