THE WHOLE WHEAT: ABOUT DOING BUSINESS ON THE INTERNET

Doing business on the Internet can also mean transferring or augmenting existing business functions, not just opening an online store. It is an important “first impression” and a powerful tool for information. When geared towards existing clients or customers, it can significantly increase their satisfaction and loyalty. Below, find what we consider to be the MOST important 7 things you need to know in order to do business on the Internet.

1.You MUST become computer literate. You don’t have to be a computer wiz, but you will need to learn your way around a computer. If you “develop a rash” about anything computer, train/hire someone to take over more complicated tasks. Then, go about the process of learning your email program, the browser, Word or Word Perfect, and how to use certain programs germane to your industry. Tip: Develop a plan, learn 1 task per week.

2. You MUST understand and utilize email. E-mail is a powerful method of communication. It can: increase documentation, decrease miscommunication, save precious contact time, get your bid in quickly…and more! Make sure you use proper e-mail etiquette. Tip: never capitalize all letters in an e-mail, it is seen as shouting.

3. You MUST have a web presence. Make sure it is a professional site. Remember the power of first impressions!  Amazingly enough, a professional company that is careful about it’s records, client communication, and written work will dismiss their website as if it is a “backroom” feature. A web site is not just for selling product, it can also be the portal to other services offered by your company. Tip: Use your company branding and any written material already. Set your browser to always open to your site.

4. You MUST know what your competition is doing online. Research what your trade or professional organization has published online. Learn how the business and the “Internet Community” works and thinks. (One of the latest job descriptions in NYC is an “E-Therapist!) Tip: Learn how to use Google, Yahoo and other search features to find/compare information.

5. You SHOULD have high-speed connectivity. (Cable or DSL) You MUST have a firewall on that Internet connection.  A physical firewall (under $100) is preferable to a software firewall.  Hackers use IP "dialers" similar to telemarketers that continually increment IP addresses until they find those that are unprotected.  Without a firewall, your business network WILL be hacked into.

6. You SHOULD use technology to establish and maintain contact with prospects or clients. Autoresponders immediately establish contact with those using your site. Contact your clients/prospects on a monthly basis via email newsletters. There are programs that provide a tremendous number of tools to help you produce a truly professional e-Newsletter. Tip: Make sure your e-Newsletter is small enough for all to view and download.

7. You MUST not only look professional, but behave in a professional manner Online. There is really nothing “off the record” Online. Some tend to dismiss the normal good business behavior they have when around other business people. Tip: Rotary International has a “4-Way Test” based upon truth, fairness, goodwill and benefiting others…apply this to the Internet! (For more information, go to www.Rotary.org)

Most of our clients are business people who did not grow up with computers. They have had to learn to become familiar and at ease with them. There are very few business owners who are actually unable to learn these skills. Classes, individual lessons, books, e-classes are available to help you become expert to the level that you need to reach

For those who don’t think you need a website or Internet Marketing –
